About the Network
The Africa Overland Network was born from a passion for vehicle-based exploration. It serves as a historical archive and a source of inspiration, cataloging the incredible journeys of independent travelers who have crossed continents. While our heart is in the trans-Africa routes, we celebrate overlanding in all its forms. This is a tribute to those who've gone before and a resource for those dreaming of the road ahead.
August 2025 Update:
When the AONet was first created, its mission was simple: to be a hub that linked overlanders and their websites. The digital landscape, however, has shifted dramatically. Social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube have become the new digital campfires where trip details are shared in real-time, and the classic website or blog post has largely faded into the background. You will notice that many of the links no longer work.
While the future of this network in a social media world is uncertain, my passion for it remains. I still get a huge amount of joy from digging up those old websites and getting lost in the stories—even with their charmingly low-resolution photos!
